Gilbert White’s Natural History of Selborne is one of the most published books in the English language. Yet for centuries little was known about the minor clergyman who earned £20 a year and rarely ventured outside his Hampshire parish. But in 1986 Richard Mabey published this detailed portrait of Gilbert White which went on to win the Whitbread Biography Award.
