WINIFRED NICHOLSON (1893 – 1981) was concerned throughout her career with light and colour. She made many visits to the Hebrides and painted some of her best loved paintings in Scotland. Bonnie Scotland was painted while staying in Gavin Maxwell’s house at Sandaig (Camusfeàrna), with their mutual friend, the poet Kathleen Raine. She shared a painting heritage with her mother and grandfather George Howard, Earl of Carlisle, a painter who was a friend of William Morris, Burne-Jones, Walter Crane and Chairman of the Trustees of the National Gallery.
