“One of the great farming books…” James Rebanks, author of The Shepherd’s Life

First published in the early 1930s, Farmer’s Glory is a warm and humorous classic about farming life. Written in simple, direct prose, Farmer’s Glory is a model of the genre and was praised by Compton Mackenzie, who described it as “a thing of beauty.” Detailing the hardships and joys of farming life in the early decades of the twentieth century, the book stands testament to a generation of those who cultivated the land on both sides of the Atlantic. With a strong sense of the local Wiltshire dialect, Street’s book is an unsentimental but still charming account of the life and the people of that corner of the county.

A. G. Street (1892-1966) was a farmer and broadcaster who grew up in Wiltshire, farmed first in Canada before returning to southern England, and wrote many books, of which Farmer’s Glory was his first and is also his best known. The book was written to supplement his income during the great depression of the early 1930s – in later years Street wrote a column for Farmer’s Weekly.

Along the with the introduction by James Rebanks, author of the bestselling The Shepherd’s Life, our new edition includes the original wood engravings by Gwen Raverat.
